(Chapter 1)

Nothing like this man had ever been seen on Privet Drive. He was tall, thin, and very old, judging by the silver of his hair and beard, which were both long enough to tuck intohis belt. He was wearing long robes, a purple cloak that swept the ground, and high-heeled,buckled boots. His blue eyes werelight, bright, and sparkling behind half-moon spectacles and his nose was very long and, as though it had been broken at least twice. This man's name was Albus Dumbledore.

"It certainly seems so," said Dumbledore. "We have much to be thankful for. Would you care for a lemon drop?"

"A what?"

"A lemon drop. They're a kind of Muggle sweet I'm rather fond of."

"You flatter me," said Dumbledore calmly."Voldemort had powers I will never have."

"Only because you're too - well - noble to use them."

"It's lucky it's dark. I haven't blushed so much since Madam Pomfrey told me she liked my new earmuffs."

"It's the best place for him," said Dumbledorefirmly. "His aunt and uncle will beable to explain everything to him when he's older. I've written them a letter."

"A letter?" repeated Professor McGonagall faintly, sitting back down on the wall. "Really,Dumbledore, you think you can explain all this in a letter? These people will never understand him! He'll be famous - a legend - I wouldn't be surprised if today was known as Harry Potter Day in the future - there will be books written about Harry -every child in our world will know his name!"

"Exactly," said Dumbledore, looking very seriously over the top of his half-moon glasses. "It would be enough to turn anyboy's head. Famous before he can walk and talk! Famous for something he won't even remember! Can't you see how much better off he'll be, growing up away from all that until he's ready to take it?"

"You think it - wise -to trust Hagrid with something as important as this?"

"I would trust Hagrid with my life," said Dumbledore.

"Is that where -?" whispered Professor McGonagall.

"Yes," said Dumbledore. "He'll have that scar forever."

"Couldn't you do something about it,Dumbledore?"

"Even if I could, I wouldn't. Scars can come in handyI have one myself above my left knee that is a perfect map of the London Underground. Well - give him here, Hagrid -we'd better get this over with.”

Q: How did Dumbledore get his scar in the London Underground?

A:You may find out one day. I am very fond of that scar.

— J.K. Rowling at the Edinburgh Book Festival (August 2004)

For a full minute the three of them stood and looked at the little bundle; Hagrid's shoulders shook, Professor McGonagall blinked furiously, and the twinkling light that usually shone from Dumbledore's eyes seemed to have gone out.

"Well," said Dumbledore finally, "that'sthat. We've no business staying here. We may as well go and join thecelebrations."

 (Chapter 4)

One o' the only safe places left was Hogwarts. Reckon Dumbledore's the only one You-Know-Who was afraid of. Didn't dare try takin'the school, not jus' then, anyway.

Hagrid seized his umbrella and whirled it over his head, "NEVER," he thundered,"INSULT-ALBUS-DUMBLEDORE-IN-FRONT-OF-ME!"

"Oh, well - I was at Hogwarts meself but I - er - got expelled, ter tell you the truth. In me thirdyear. They snapped me wand in half an'everything. But Dumbledore let me stay on as gamekeeper. Great man, Dumbledore."

“Course,”said Hagrid. " They wanted Dumbledore for Minister, o'course, but he'd never leave Hogwarts, so old Cornelius Fudge gotthe job. Bungler if ever there was one. Sohe pelts Dumbledore with owls every morning, askin' for advice.”

(Chapter 6)

Harry unwrapped his Chocolate Frog and picked upthe card. It showed a man's face. Hewore half-moon glasses, had a long, crooked nose, and flowing silver hair, beard, and mustache. Underneath the picture was the name Albus Dumbledore.

ALBUS DUMBLEDORE

CURRENTLY HEADMASTER OF HOGWARTS

Considered by many the greatest wizard of modern times, Dumbledore is particularly famous for his defeat of the dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945, for the discovery of the twelve uses of dragon's blood, and his work on alchemy with his partner, Nicolas Flamel. Professor Dumbledore enjoys chamber music and tenpin bowling.

(Chapter7)

Albus Dumbledore had gotten to his feet. He was beaming at the students, his a*rms opened wideas if nothing could have pleased him more than to see them all there.

"Welcome," he said. "Welcome to anew year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a fewwords. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you!"

He sat back down. Everybody clapped and cheered. Harry didn't know whether to laugh or not.

"Is he - a bit mad?" he askedPercy uncertainly.

"Mad?" said Percy airily. "He's a genius! Best wizard in the world! But he is a bit mad, yes. Potatoes, Harry?"

"First years should note that the forest on the grounds is forbidden to all pupils. And a few of our older students would do well to remember that as well."

Dumbledore's twinkling eyes flashed in the direction of the Weasley twins.

And now, before we go to bed, let ussing the school song!" cried Dumbledore. Harry noticed that the otherteachers' smiles had become rather fixed.

Dumbledore gave his wand a little flick, as if he was trying to get a fly off the end,and a long golden ribbon flew out of it, which rose high above the tables and twisted itself, snakelike, into words.

"Everyone pick their favorite tune," said Dumbledore, "and off we go!"

Everybody finished the song at different times. At last, only the Weasley twins were leftsinging along to a very slow funeral march. Dumbledore conducted their last few lines with his wand and when they had finished, he was one of those who clapped loudest.

"Ah, music,"he said, wiping his eyes. "A magic beyond all we do here! And now, bedtime. Off you trot!"

(Chapter 12)

Up at the High Table, Dumbledorehad swapped his pointed wizard's hat for a flowered bonnet, and was chucklingmerrily at a joke Professor Flitwick had just read him.

"So," said Dumbledore, slipping off the desk to sit on the floor with Harry, "you, like hundreds before you, have discovered the delights of the Mirror of Erised."

"I don't need a cloak to become invisible," said Dumbledore gently. "Now, can you think what the Mirror of Erised shows us all?"

"Yes and no," said Dumbledore quietly. "It shows us nothing more or less than thedeepest, most desperate desire of our hearts. You, who have never knownyour family, see them standing around you. Ronald Weasley, who has always beenovershadowed by his brothers, sees himself standing alone, the best of all ofthem. However, this mirror will give usneither knowledge nor truth. Men have wasted away before it, entranced by whatthey have seen, or been driven mad, not knowing if what it shows is real or even possible.

"The Mirror will be moved to a new home tomorrow,Harry, and I ask you not to go looking for it again. If you ever do run acrossit, you will now be prepared. It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live, remember that. Now, why don't you put thatadmirable cloak back on and get off to bed?"

Harry stood up.

"Sir - Professor Dumbledore? Can I ask you something?"

"Obviously, you've just done so," Dumbledo resmiled. "You may ask me one more thing, however."

"What do you see when you look in the mirror?"

"I? I see myself holding a pair of thick, woolensocks."

Harry stared.

"One can never have enough socks," saidDumbledore. "Another Christmas has come and gone and I didn't get a singlepair. People will insist on giving me books."

It was only when he was back in bed that it struck Harrythat Dumbledore might not have been quite truthful. But then, he thought, as he shoved Scabbers off his pillow, it had been quite a personal question.

(Chapter 13)

"Well done,"said Dumbledore quietly, so that only Harry could hear. "Nice to see you haven't been brooding about that mirror ...been keeping busy ... excellent ..."

Allie: What did Dumbledore truly see in themirror of Erised?
J.K. Rowling: He saw his family alive, whole and happy –Ariana, Percival and Kendra all returned to him, and Aberforth reconciled tohim. (source:  J.K. RowlingWeb Chat Transcript Jul 30, 2007 )

Nippy23: We see socks a lot throughout the series, such as dobby's love for them and dumbledore’s claim to see them in the mirror oferised, what’s the reason behind all the sock

J.K. Rowling: Nothing deep and significant, I'm afraid. They're just a comedy item.

(Chapter 17)

"I feared I might be too late."

"You nearly were, I couldn't have kept himoff the Stone much longer -"

"Not the Stone, boy, you - the effort involved nearly killed you. For one terrible moment there, I was afraid it had. As for the Stone, it has beendestroyed."

Dumbledore smiled at the look of amazement on Harry's face."To one as young as you, I'm sure it seems incredible, but to Nicolas and Perenelle, it really is like going to bed after a very, very long day. After all, to the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure. You know, the Stone was really not such a wonderful thing. As much money and life as you could want! The two things most human beings would choose above all -the trouble is, humans do have a knack for choosing precisely those things that are worst for them."

Harry lay there, lost for words. Dumbledore hummed a little and smiled at the ceiling.

"Sir?" said Harry. "I've been thinking, sir -even if the Stone's gone, Vol-, I mean, You-Know-Who -"

"Call him Voldemort, Harry. Always use the proper name for things. Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself."

"The truth." Dumbledore sighed. "It is a beautiful and terrible thing, and should therefore be treated with great caution. However, I shall answer your questions unless I have a very good reason not to, in which case I beg you'll forgive me. I shall not, of course, lie."

And Harry knew it would be no good to argue. "But why couldn't Quirrell touch me?"

"Your mother died to save you. If there is one thing Voldemort cannot understand, it is love. Hedidn't realize that love as powerful as your mother's for you leaves its ownmark. Not a scar, no visible sign... to have been loved so deeply, even though the person who loved us is gone, will give us some protection forever. It is in your very skin. Quirrell, full of hatred, greed, andambition, sharing his soul with Voldemort, could not touch you for this reason. It was agony to touch a person marked by something so good."

"Quirrell said Snape -"

"Professor Snape, Harry."

"Ah, now, I'm glad you asked me that. It was one of my more brilliant ideas, and between you and me, that's saying something. You see, only onewho wanted to find the Stone - find it, but not use it - would be able to getit, otherwise they'd just see themselves making gold or drinking Elixir of Life. My brain surprises even me sometimes ... Now, enough questions. I suggest you make a start on thesesweets. Ah! Bettie Bott's Every Flavor Beans! I was unfortunate enough in myyouth to come across a vomit-flavored one, and since then I'm afraid I'verather lost my liking for them - but I think I'll be safe with a nice toffee, don't you?"

"So the Stone's gone?" said Ron finally. "Flamel's just going to die?"

"That'swhat I said, but Dumbledore thinks that - what was it? - 'to the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.'"

"I always said he was off his rocker," said Ron, looking quite impressed at how crazy his herowas.

"D'you think he meant you to do it?"said Ron. "Sending you your father's cloak and everything?"

"Well,” Hermione exploded,"if he did - I mean to say that's terrible - you could have been killed."

"No, it isn't," said Harry thoughtfully. "He's a funny man,Dumbledore. I think he sort of wanted to give me a chance. I think he knows more or less everything that goes on here, you know. I reckon he had a pretty good idea we were going to try, and instead of stopping us, he just taught usenough to help. I don't think it was an accident he let me find out how the mirror worked. It's almost like he thought I had the right to face Voldemort if I could ..."

"Yeah, Dumbledore's off his rocker, all right," said Ron proudly.

"There are all kinds of courage," said Dumbledore, smiling. "It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends. I therefore award ten points to Mr. Neville Longbottom."
